About

I’ve always harbored a love for photography. My father was an avid photographer, so perhaps that’s where I get my knack from...who knows? Wherever it came from, I’m glad for it! I usually carry my camera with me wherever I go. I maintain this photoblog to record my day to day excursions and as an exercise to better myself as a photographer...that said, I strive to post regularly-at least several times a week. Oh, and I especially enjoy photographing pets...I love their honesty and whimsy and I enjoy capturing their unique personalities!

A little history and assorted geek info:

My passion for cameras and photography goes back a few years-as a kid I loved my little Kodak instamatic camera and I made a habit of sneaking off with my Mom’s Polaroid every chance I got...and just for the record, I still love Polaroids and I still have Mom's Polaroid as well! Later on down the road I graduated to my first SLR, a Pentax K1000 and then later to a Canon AE-1.

While freelancing in the film and television business for several years, my photography fell to the wayside. Then in 2000, the movie biz slowed down considerably in the area, and I found myself with a lot of time on my hands. So, bolstered by my love for animals (as well as lack of income), I started a pet care business to fill in the gaps.

After being out of the loop with the arts for a while, I started missing my creative side and that's when I picked up a camera again and bought my first DSLR, a Canon Rebel XT in 2005...pair that with my Apple computer and I was hooked all over again. I later moved on to the Canon 30D, Canon 40D, and ultimately the Canon 5D Mark II. I finally added the Leica M8 Rangefinder in 2008...a camera I had coveted for quite a while, and I most recently added the Olympus PEN EP-1 which is a nice complement to the M8.

After much deliberation, I made a bold decision and sold all of my Canon gear. Perhaps one day I will decide to add a DSLR back into the mix, but for the last year I have found that the Leica has been my "go to" camera 90% of the time. The M8 is worlds apart from shooting with a DSLR. Part of the reason I wanted it, aside from the fact that it's quite simply a work of art in design and sports the infamous Leica red dot and reputation, is that I wanted to simplify and get back to the basics of photography. Although it is digital (and I am one of those photographers that have fully embraced the digital age and very rarely shoot film anymore), it is very basic: it's manual focus only, the only meter setting is average/center weighted, there are only two shutter speeds: manual and aperture priority. Truthfully, I wondered if I would be able to adjust. Boy, did I ever-to the degree that my beloved Canon 5D just sat on the shelf for most of the year. I upgraded to the 5D Mark II, and even that model couldn't invoke me to put down the Leica for long. Yes, it's very expensive camera and definitely has it's quirks, but oh my gosh, the build quality, design, and the images that the Leica glass yields is well worth it.

There is no real agenda as to what I shoot...I shot whatever calls to me in the moment most of the time. I started doing some freelance photography about a year and a half ago and have had selected works shown in local galleries from time to time. My pet photography is on display here in Savannah, GA, at Central Animal Hospital, located downtown in the Starland Arts District. I am also represented by Lanoue Film Arts in Boston, MA.
